At the Gates of the Underworld: New Discoveries on Anubis and Mummification at Athribis
The western mountain range near the ancient city of Athribis in Upper Egypt contains numerous structures that have so far received little scholarly attention – tombs, rock sanctuaries, and quarry installations – which together constitute a multilayered religious landscape. At its center lies the rock-cut temple of Asclepius, forming part of large complex that also included a sanctuary of Anubis.
A newly discovered dipinto in a nearby quarry illustrates the interconnection of Greek and Egyptian traditions on an iconographic level, while also pointing to the concept of subterranean spaces as “gateways to the underworld”. Taking into account further recent discoveries—including a mummification table and a rock chamber bearing traces of mummification—the paper offers new insights into the cultic landscape of Athribis and the integration of newly introduced Greek deities into the religious traditions of Greco-Roman Egypt.
